Our casting work is in its infancy with a focus on building orignals for silicon rubber mold casting. A lot of trial and error.
This is a work in progress. To date I have succeeded only in completing a wood original. 98cm long.
The shape and lines draw from the 1920s Art Deco style.
It was originally made on the request of a friend for a garden figurine, but I got a bit carried away.
The wood original is made from a high density compressed fine wood fibre. I found this good for detail and predictable behaviour when shaping down a fully symmetric and aerodynamic shape.
Extensive use of wood putty in several stages enables development of sharp curved edges.
I failed twice so far in casting a good quality concrete copy, via a single stage pour into a silicone rubber mold.
I think I will need to change to a two piece mold and then cement the two halves together. Also need to thicken some weak points where the concrete cast tended to break.
